Shahana Kane is a Hindustani classical vocalist and a disciple of Shri. Mukul Kulkarni and Vidushi Sukhada Kane. Shahana’s introduction into Indian classical music started in tabla from the age of 6, under the guidance of Pandit Yogesh Samsi. Her initial training in tabla throughout her childhood has given her a love for tabla and a better understanding of laya and theka. In 2013, Shahana began learning Hindustani classical vocal music under Shri. Mukul Kulkarni, a disciple of the late doyen of the Gwalior gharana, Pandit Sharad Sathe, and Pandit Arun Kashalkar (Agra-Gwalior gharanas). Her training in khayal under his careful guidance is predominantly of the Gwalior-Agra gharanas. During her intensive taleem, Mukul ji has imparted many traditional khayals and authentic bandishes of the Gwalior gharana to her, including tarana, tappa, tapkhyal, as well as training in traditional Gwalior gayaki. Shahana has also been receiving taleem for the past few years from her mother-in-law Vid. Sukhada Kane, a disciple of Pandit Anandrao Limaye, Vidushi Kamal Tambe, and Pandit D.V. Kanebuwa. Under Sukhada ji’s guidance, Shahana has developed finesse in her singing, as well as a more nuanced understanding of the traditional Jaipur-Atrauli gharana gayaki and its repertoire. Shahana has also gained a wider perspective of the repertoires and gayakis of the Gwalior and Agra gharanas, as well as semi classical vocal music, from her training under Sukhada ji.
Her calm and composed demeanour is reflected in her singing, giving equal importance to musical thought in her singing, the purity and accuracy of notes, as well as the impact her singing makes on the listener. Shahana always strives to maintain the authenticity of the art and do justice to her taleem.
Shahana has been featured as a young artist in Pulse Connects South Asian Arts Magazine, July 2016, and was later awarded the Emily Rastall Student Development Scholarship and also the Henri Lawson Student Development Scholarship from the University of Birmingham in June 2017 to further her training in Indian classical vocal music in India. Shahana has performed at various locations across the UK, including notable performances at Warwick Arts Centre 2025, Summer Solstice Festival 2018 organised by South Asian Arts – UK, and Khyal: Music and Imagination 2024 at the Nehru Centre, London organised by SAMA Arts Network. Shahana is now based in Pune, India.
In addition to her training in Hindustani classical vocal music, Shahana has also trained in vocal technique (from an anatomical perspective) and vocal pedagogy for over 4 years from Janice V Thompson, UK. This training has enabled her to be especially attentive to healthy and efficient voice production in herself and whilst teaching others. It has also given her an understanding of how the voice changes through different stages of life and how to better manage ones voice during these stages. Shahana has successfully completed CPD training courses on Vocal Pedagogy from The Association of Teachers of Singing (AOTOS), as well as the Voice Study Centre, to further her knowledge. Under the guidance of Janice Thompson as well as her gurus, Shahana has developed a way to apply these techniques to Hindustani classical vocal music.
Shahana has been teaching vocal music to a few keen students online and face-to-face for the past 9 + years. Shahana teaches with care and patience and is especially keen to pass down what she has gained from her own taleem.

After her marriage, Shahana continued her musical journey under the guidance of her mother-in-law, Vidushi Sukhada Kane, alongside her ongoing training with Mukul ji. Continuing her musical journey even after marriage, Sukhada ji learned the intricacies of Agra and Gwalior Gharana gayaki from her father-in-law Sangeetacharya late Pt. D. V. Kanebuwa. After the sad demise of Pt. Kanebuwa, Sukhada ji continued her training from his disciples Pt. Narendra Kanekar, Balasaheb Tikekar and J.V. Bhatkhande Buwa as well as Pt. Limayebuwa’s disciple Sudhir Pote. Sukhada ji is an ‘A’ Grade artist of All India Radio and has been selected in the Reference Panel of Artists of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR – Gov. of India). As well as being a successful performer of Hindustani Classical Music, Sukhada ji is a dedicated guru and has taught many students for over three decades.
Shahana is very fortunate to receive taleem from Sukhada ji, who imparts this training with generosity, attention and discipline. This guidance has helped Shahana to refine her performance skills, broaden her perspective, and enrich her musical expression, presentation and repertoire.
